What a cracker. I got down to Lancing at 10ish and the place was swarming
with kites. At least 15, maybe more. seemed like good conditions for kiting
but as soon as the tide started reaching the groynes they gradually packed
up. I rigged up a 5.3m Gun sail on the RRD Cultwave. And it was the right
size for the whole session. Just needed to be coaxed up onto the plane to
start with, but plenty once you were up and moving. Later in the session
(12 o'clock) it was pretty well overpowered, but by then i didnt fancy
coming in to de-rig and change down as the tide was getting high and
munchy. There was a bit of a wind shadow on the inside so the extra power
was a bonus on the wave.
The waves were classic and spot on for down the line. It was pure side
shore and peeling right. About chest to head high I suppose. And as the
tide was pushing up there was a decent face on every wave. I pretty much
found a good ride every run back to the beach.
Usually the wind swings round to the west then disappears. Today was the
opposite, perfect sunshine and waves and the wind just got stronger and
stronger. By the end, the extra power in the sail meant that you could
wang it down the line for about two groynes worth, linking across the
flatter sections on board speed alone.
And to top it all there wasnt a soul in sight for the last hour. All the
kites were gone and no-one else windsurfing.
With the sunshine, I cant believe its mid january really. De-rigged and the
kit was dry before i got it back in the car.
